Diary films, made by artists, elevate what might be called 'home movies' to the well-deserved status of art. Portrait films operate similarly when portraying a person or place that we as the audience assumes holds some significance to the filmmaker. The audience is then allowed a peer into the thoughts and lives of enchanting people we would not otherwise have the pleasure of knowing. Diary and portrait films allow an emotional closeness and a refuge from the lonliness one might feel in daily life, to relate to the filmmaker or film-subject who we can feel is sharing themselves with us. Even more, the experience we are afforded when watching diary and portrait films is quite oppositional to the solitary nature of film-watching: in which we sit quietly in the dark either alone, or ignoring anyone who might also be present. This program's aim is to provide an experience of emotional intimacy with the filmmakers and film-subjects of the works, to present strangers at their most vulnerable, their most lovely. I hope you enjoy it. -EVL
